Ethiopia Showcases Its Special Economic Zones for Investors in Tokyo, Japan
The Ethiopian Embassy in Tokyo, in collaboration with Asia-Africa-Arab 55, a Tokyo-based independent institute, organized an investment forum on February 28, 2025, in Tokyo. The forum aimed at promoting Ethiopian business opportunities to potential Japanese investors.
In his opening remarks, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Japan, Ambassador Daba Debele, expressed gratitude to Asia-Africa-Arab 55 and its Chairman for organizing the seminar dedicated to promoting Ethiopian business opportunities for Japanese companies. He took note of the century-old, long-standing diplomatic relations between Japan and Ethiopia, built on mutual interest and respect. Despite the strong bilateral ties, he noted that trade and investment cooperation between the two countries remains below its potential. While recent developments are encouraging, the number of Japanese companies operating in Ethiopia is still relatively small compared to other developed nations. Similarly, trade volume between the two countries does not effectively reflect their historical ties and economic potential. Ambassador Daba further invited Japanese companies to invest in Ethiopia, particularly in the manufacturing, agro-processing, mining, and ICT sectors.
Mr. Hisafumi Kogo, Chairman of Asia-Africa-Arab 55, acknowledged Ethiopia’s rich history and culture, encouraging Japanese companies to explore investment opportunities in the country.
On the occasion, Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation, Dr. Fiseha Yitagesu, briefed the gathering on Ethiopia’s business opportunities, focusing on specialized industrial zones and the government incentives available to foreign investors. He highlighted that Ethiopia currently has thirteen specialized industrial parks and free trade zones, attracting both local and foreign investors. These industrial zones have created direct and indirect employment for over 300,000 workers and have generated over $1.2 billion in export revenue, significantly contributing to import substitution. He also elaborated on Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly financial sector reforms and the opening of the banking industry to foreign investors. Dr. Fiseha also emphasized that the Ethiopian government provides land and basic infrastructure for large companies capable of developing their own industrial parks.
The forum provided Japanese delegates with a comprehensive understanding of Ethiopia’s social, economic, and infrastructural landscape. As Ethiopia continues its economic transformation, Japan’s expertise, technology, and investment capital are expected to play a crucial role in driving sustainable development.
The event highlighted the mutual benefits of Ethiopia-Japan economic collaboration and set the stage for deeper engagement in the years ahead. Ethiopia’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms offer significant opportunities for Japanese businesses. As the fastest-growing economy in Sub-Saharan Africa and the third-largest economy in the region, Ethiopia provides unparalleled market access to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) members, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment.
Ethiopia’s Role in Degrading Al-Shabaab’s Threat
Recently, Al-Shabaab has intensified its offensive in Somalia. Latest in the attack is the March 11 deadly assault on the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne that began with a suicide bombing and claimed the lives of 12 people. The group continuous to pose threat changing its modes of operations. In addition to deploying suicide bombers, Al-Shabaab is currently engaged in direct military confrontations with the National Army of Somalia. The intensified attacks of Al-Shabaab proves that the group continues to pose significant threat to the peace and security of the region.
In the past years, Ethiopia has played a significant and multifaceted role in combating terrorism in Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region. At the heart of Ethiopia’s involvement lies the drive to protect national security interests, ensure regional stability, and fulfill its commitment to international counterterrorism efforts. Guided by these objectives, Ethiopian forces have participated in operations to dismantle terrorist strongholds in coordination with the Somali Government.
One case in point is the March 4, 2025 military operations the Ethiopian Airforce has conducted. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Somali National Army, to contain the advance of the terror group. This demonstrates the level of cooperation between the two countries in the security sector. The Chief of the Somali National Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Abdullahi, acknowledged the military intervention stating that Ethiopian air support had strengthened counterterrorism efforts against the terror group. Indeed, it is worth mentioning that, the gallant Ethiopia forces have sacrificed their lives to contain the expansion of this terrorist group.
Ethiopia will continue to support the brotherly people of Somali to establish effective governance and security structures in the country. The frequent engagements at the leadership level, the Joint Ministerial Council mechanism and the overall multisectoral engagements would further boost the strong relationship between the two countries. More specifically, Ethiopia works to solidify the bilateral security cooperation through enhancing intelligence sharing mechanisms, organizing joint training exercises, and making coordinated operations against terrorist threats. Moreover, Ethiopia actively participates in regional security mechanisms, such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which focuses on peace and security issues in the Horn of Africa. Through IGAD, Ethiopia collaborates with neighboring countries on counterterrorism strategies and intelligence sharing.
Ethiopia remains vigilant, and actively supports Somalia’s fight against terrorism. The group is desperate to exploit regional and global contexts to cause terror in the region. It is high time that partners and stakeholders assemble the necessary resources for a sustained effort to support the fight against terrorism. Ethiopia will continue providing support to contain the advance of Al-Shabaab in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia while encouraging partners to provide logistical, financial and technical support to help Somalia deal with this threat.
